U11 Hockey vs Highgate

This was our first fixture in hockey with Highgate for several years and it proved to be a challenging one. Our A and B team were significantly weakened by absentees, but our teams’ performances showed great promise.

The A team performed particularly well despite the absence of key members, creating numerous opportunities to score, particularly on the counter-attack. Indeed, several boys who normally represent our B team made telling contributions. Nevertheless, I felt that some naïve defending in terms of marking and general organisation presented Highgate with more scoring chances than would normally be the case. Having said this, the defending of our team was still dogged and resolute.

St. Anthony’s took the lead in the first half through a powerful shot from Zac. Even though our team continued to create great scoring opportunities, Highgate deservedly equalised. The game continued in a relentless end-to-end fashion and ultimately finished in a draw, which was a fair result. Hopefully, when these two teams meet again at the UCS tournament, a full strength St. Anthony’s team will be able to provide a sterner test.

The B team really struggled against Highgate’s B team, having lost its strongest players. In the first half, the team found it really difficult to retain possession and keep the Highgate attacks at bay, finishing the first half 6 – 0 down. After an intense half-time talk, the B team displayed great spirit and improvement, particularly regarding their positioning, marking and general energy levels. They were also more affective in the attacking half, but unfortunately were still unable to convert any of their chances. However, they only conceded two more goals, with the score finishing 8 – 0. Despite this heavy defeat, I was impressed by the turn around in performance in the second half, from a team that was mostly made up of C team members.
