St. George's Park Football Tournament

The First XI Football Squad had a great weekend at the inspiring facilities of St. George's Park. The facility was surrounded by manicured Football pitches, state of the art Sports Science equipment and most inspiring of all was that the England national team had used the same changing rooms, hotel and Football facilities that we were.

The group stages on Saturday were closely contested. We found ourselves in the much more difficult group B alongside Arnold House, Hereward House and Westminster 1st XI.

We lost to Arnold House 5-2 in our first group match after missing a plethora of early opportunities. After regrouping we were impressive in a 2-0 win over Westminster, which meant we were tied on points with Hereward House going into the final group match. We were ahead on goal difference so a draw would be enough to take us through to the Semi Finals. What followed was a nail biting 4-4 thriller, with Hereward House sieging upon our goal for the final five minutes.

Day two was Finals Day and as we finished second in our group, we played the winners of group A, Sussex House, who had won all three of their group Games on day one. This was our most impressive performance of the weekend, winning 4-2 and never giving the opposition a sniff in ruthless fashion until the final whistle.

The Final was a North v South showdown against Oldham Hulme. Oldham had a very vocal and aggressive approach to their Football, which I put down as the main reason they came out as 4-1 winners. Going into half time at 2-1, the match still could have gone either way, but the St. Anthony's heads dropped at 3-1 and Oldham never gave us a chance from then on.

A great weekend of Football and quite an achievement to reach the final after the disappointment of losing our first group game. The boys represented the School incredibly well.
