Piano Master Class:

Helen Reid & Lydia Aoki

Some of the advanced pianists in the school were treated to a morning of master class sessions from Helen Reid, professor of piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Trinity College of Music Junior Departments.  Helen first came to public attention when she appeared on BBC2 in the National Keyboard Finals of the BBC Young Musician competition in 1998 and has performed in all of the major London halls and internationally.  We had boys from year 4 upwards bringing pieces they had been working on towards examinations, scholarship auditions and performances.  The boys found Helen’s excellent coaching invaluable and extremely enjoyable.  Further to her master class sessions, Helen then performed to the Senior House a programme of Bach, Gershwin, Ravel and Debussy in a short solo recital, which again was hugely popular with the boys and even a few budding pianists from reception were invited to attend!  The day was rounded-off superbly with a evening duet concert with colleague Lydia Aoki, a pianist beginning her career in London.  The evening’s music was quite exceptional, a programme can be found here.  A very warm-hearted ‘thank you’ to Helen and Lydia for a truly inspiring day.
