Concert Report - Emily Armour

The much-awaited concert by our very own St. Anthony’s singing teacher, Emily Armour was held last night in the junior school hall.  She was joined by her fellow colleague from the Monteverdi choir, Sarah Denbee and their accompanist Martin Ford, the Assistant Organist of Westminster Abbey.

The concert was well worth waiting for.  Emily and Sarah led us through a wide assortment of vocal duet music.  The concert itself was entitled The Art of Ensemble Singing - an evening of duets. They not only brought us music by Bach, Mozart, Pergolesi, Purcell, Rossini and Delibes but also educated us on vocal and compositional techniques using this magnificent music as an example; which even included a round of audience participation!

Extremely pleasingly, there were many St. Anthony’s boys in the audience who were either having singing lessons or were members of the school choir who really seemed to enjoy the event.  Emily and Sarah demonstrated through these beautiful musical examples, techniques such as singing in thirds, dynamic control, vocal decoration and notably a quite lovely Bach-Pergolesi Stabat Mater to illustrate the use of the harmonic clash to convey emotion – my own particular favourite moment of the evening.  Do hear another version sung here:

A huge St. Anthony’s ‘thank you’ to all three (world-class) musicians on behalf of the boys of St. Anthony’s and from me personally.

Don’t forget Emily is also available as a singing teacher here at the school: contact me for more details.
