1st XI vs UCS match review

As the Indian summer lingered on yet deeper into October the 1st XI took to the resplendent and still dry turf of Brondesbury to square up to the might of UCS. A very tight and keenly fought match ensued with no quarter given by either side. Goals were always going to be at a premium and with only a few half chances for either team; we went into half-time with the score very much 0-0. St Anthony’s had to work on three things in the second half: getting closer to their opponents when defending, getting more width in attack and abandoning that ‘luxury’ extra touch when passing, in order to move the ball quicker. St. Anthony’s rose to their challenges and the shape of the team improved as the game wore on, but neither side was able to break that dead-lock. 19 minutes and 30 seconds were on the referee’s watch of the allotted 20 minutes due to be played, when almost from nowhere Toby allowed a ball to drop over his shoulder, swivelled and struck with ferocious intent to send that mitre tactic into the top right hand corner of the net. Barely had UCS taken the restart before the final whistle went. 1-0 to St. Anthony’s; fabulous team effort!
