Year 7 Geography Field Trip to Kingswood Colomendy

Over 4 days in May, twenty-five pupils and 4 members of staff visited Kingswood Colomendy Educational Centre and had a highly enjoyable time during this action-packed trip to North Wales.  Pupils studied the fluvial processes and landforms and had an opportunity to look at geographical features in the field; in particular to carry out investigations of the River Alyn on two sites – one on a straight in Colomendy and another on a meander in Loggerheads. Raw data had to be followed up with classroom/computer-based presentations. The boys were able to see for themselves what they had been taught. Equally beneficial was the opportunity to carry out their own measurements of downstream changes: channel gradient, discharge, velocity, wetted perimeter, width and load to further their understanding of fluvial processes. The weather was also memorable with horizontal rain on the Thursday all day providing a chilly closure to the excursion!

In between the geography work, pupils had much fun negotiating obstacles blindfolded, tackling the Kingswood trail of mystery, Jacob’s ladder, climbing the tower and even trying to beat their friends at fencing. Many thanks to the pupils for their enthusiasm, good humour and, of course, the school for supporting us on this trip which made it such a success. Lastly, our thanks go to Paul C, Joe J and Joe B for their time and boundless energy.
